Deep Excavation by Suction: Down to About 45 m

Deep excavation by suction reaches down to about 45 m, roughly a 15-story building, depending on the material. With hose extension, the machine works up to 100 to 150 m away, about the length of a football pitch. The truck stays outside the danger zone.

How deep can a suction excavator dig?

A suction excavator pulls soil, sand, gravel, and small stones straight up through a 10-inch hose. Our RSP machines reach down to about 45 m - close to a 15-story building - though the exact depth depends on the material. Wet clay or packed gravel slows the pull; loose sand comes up fast. This is dry suction using fan technology, so there is no water and no slurry - it is not a pump truck. If the method is new to you, see how a suction excavator works.

How far can it reach from the truck?

With hose extension fitted, the machine reaches about 100 to 150 m from the truck - roughly the length of a football pitch. The hydraulically movable 3D suction arm and radio remote control let the operator place the nozzle exactly where it is needed, deep in a trench or far across the site. Because the truck stays parked outside, it never has to sit next to a deep open cut or a live pipeline. Keep the hose extension in mind: that reach needs the extra hose fitted.

Depth and reach at a glance
SpecFigure (with comparison)
Suction depthDown to ~45 m - about a 15-story building (material-dependent)
Horizontal reach~100-150 m with hose extension - about a football pitch
Suction hose10-inch (250 mm) hose diameter
AirflowUp to 44,000 m3/h - like a giant industrial vacuum cleaner
VacuumUp to 55,000 Pa - enough to lift single stones up to ~35 kg
Solids handledChunks up to 250 mm across - about a dinner plate

Why does suction win at depth?

At depth, digging by hand gets slow and dangerous. A deep trench needs shoring, a bucket cannot work cleanly around pipes, and every meter down adds risk. Suction changes the picture:

  • Protects buried pipes and cables - the nozzle works around live lines with no bucket or blade near them.
  • Keeps workers safe - no worker in the deep trench; the operator stands back at the remote.
  • Cuts manpower cost - one machine and one operator can replace 100 to 150 men with shovels, so you also save on transport, catering, and gate passes.
  • Faster - up to 8x quicker than manual digging.
  • German engineering - RSP technology, built in Saalfeld, Germany, and run by trained operators.

How does suction compare with other methods at depth?

Deep digging methods compared
MethodAt depth
Manual diggingSlow, needs many workers down in the trench, high risk near live lines
Standard excavator / bucketFast in open ground, but the bucket can crush pipes and cannot work close to cables
Suction excavatorReaches ~45 m, truck stays outside, no worker in the trench, up to 8x faster than hand digging

For tight cross-sections - narrow pits and shafts worked from above ground - see pit and shaft excavation. To book a unit with a trained operator, rent a suction excavator from our Abu Dhabi base. Fast mobilization across the UAE; other GCC countries on request.

Every site is different. Send us your target depth, your reach, and the soil type, and our team will tell you what is realistic. Our suction excavator system is stationed in Abu Dhabi (ALMARKAZ) and deploys across all 6 GCC countries.

Frequently Asked Questions

How deep can your suction excavator dig?

It reaches down to about 45 m - close to a 15-story building - depending on the material. Loose sand comes up fast, while wet clay or packed gravel is slower. The exact depth is always material-dependent, so send us your soil details for a realistic figure.

How far can the machine work from the truck?

With hose extension fitted, it reaches about 100 to 150 m - roughly the length of a football pitch. This lets the truck stay parked safely away from the deep cut or the live line. The extra hose must be fitted to reach that far.

Is suction faster than digging by hand at depth?

Yes. It is up to 8 times faster than manual digging. One machine with one trained operator can do the work of 100 to 150 men with shovels, which also cuts transport, catering, and gate-pass costs.

Does deep suction use water like hydro excavation?

No. This is dry suction using fan technology - no water, no slurry, and not a pump truck. The material comes up dry, which makes disposal and backfill simpler on deep jobs.

Can it reach deep without a worker going into the trench?

Yes. The operator controls the hydraulically movable 3D suction arm by radio remote from outside the trench. No worker has to enter the deep cut, which is the biggest safety gain at depth.
