Contaminated Soil Removal - Dry, Controlled, No Slurry

Contaminated soil removal with a suction excavator is dry and controlled. The machine lifts polluted material by air, with no water added. So there is no slurry and no extra contamination volume to treat. Heitmann Middle East runs RSP suction excavators from Abu Dhabi across the GCC.

When do you need contaminated soil removal?

You need it when soil holds fuel, oil, chemicals, or other pollutants and must come out in a clean, controlled way. This is common in refinery zones, tank farms, and around old fuel storage. Leaks under old petrol station tanks are a classic case - a fuel smell, dying plants, and complaints from nearby residents. Here you want to take out the bad soil without spreading it or mixing it with water. For digging inside live plants, see refinery and petrochemical excavation.

  • Refinery and tank-farm areas where polluted soil sits close to live pipes and cables
  • Old petrol stations with a fuel smell, dying plants, or resident complaints
  • Spots where the soil must stay dry for lab testing and controlled disposal
  • Tight areas where a digger cannot work safely near hazards

Why does dry suction keep contamination low?

The RSP suction excavator uses fan technology - strong airflow, up to 44,000 m3/h. Think of a vacuum cleaner, just industrial size. It lifts the soil by air alone. This is dry suction: no water, no slurry, and it is not a pump truck. Because no water is added, you do not create extra contaminated liquid. The polluted material stays dry and contained in the tank, ready for controlled disposal. Less volume means less to treat, transport, and pay for. You can compare it with our vacuum excavation services for other dry-dig jobs.

How does the suction excavator remove contaminated soil?

  1. The operator positions the machine at a safe distance and sets the earthing and gas warning system.
  2. The hydraulic 3D suction arm and 10-inch hose reach the exact spot, guided by radio remote control.
  3. Strong airflow pulls the contaminated soil, stones, and debris straight into the sealed tank.
  4. The dry material is discharged into a controlled container for lab testing or approved disposal.

Is this tank cleaning?

No. This is excavation, not tank cleaning. The suction excavator removes contaminated soil, debris, and loose material from the ground and around structures. It does not clean the inside of storage tanks. If you need the soil around and under old tanks taken out dry and safe, that is exactly the job this machine does - see petrol station tank leak excavation for that specific case. To put a machine and trained operator on your site, you can rent a suction excavator from our Abu Dhabi base.

Is it safe in refinery and high-hazard areas?

Yes. This German-built RSP machine is Zone 2 certified and made for refinery and high-hazard work. It carries an on-board gas warning system with two sensors and automatic shutdown, an earthing system so no sparks form, a spark arrestor, and a Chalwyn valve. This matters when you dig in fuel-soaked ground. You can read the full safety systems that protect the crew and the site. One machine plus one operator also replaces 100 to 150 workers with shovels, so fewer people stand near the hazard.

Public context: Fujairah tank areas

After the publicly reported drone strikes on oil tanks at Fujairah, contaminated soil in tank-farm and refinery areas became a known industry issue. This is general public context, not a Heitmann project. It shows why dry, controlled soil removal near fuel storage is in demand across the region. The goal is always to take out the polluted ground without spreading it or adding water.

How fast can you start?

Mobilized from our Abu Dhabi base. Send us your site details for a mobilization estimate. Fast mobilization across the UAE; other GCC countries on request. Every project is different, so we plan around your timeline and disposal rules. For an overview of the full service, see Heitmann Middle East. Our team is reachable 24/7 via WhatsApp for emergencies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does removing contaminated soil add water or create slurry?

No. The suction excavator uses dry suction with fan technology, so no water is added. The contaminated soil stays dry and contained in the tank, ready for controlled disposal. This keeps the volume of contaminated material low and avoids extra liquid to treat.

Is this tank cleaning?

No, this is excavation, not tank cleaning. The machine removes contaminated soil, debris, and loose material from the ground and around structures. It does not clean the inside of storage tanks.

Is it safe to dig in refinery and fuel-soaked ground?

Yes. The machine is Zone 2 certified and carries a gas warning system with two sensors and automatic shutdown, an earthing system, a spark arrestor, and a Chalwyn valve. These systems help stop sparks and warn the crew in hazardous areas. See our safety page for the full detail.

How deep can it remove contaminated soil?

Suction depth reaches down to about 45 m, depending on the material. The machine handles solids up to 250 mm and stones up to around 35 kg. Airflow reaches up to 44,000 m3/h - think of a vacuum cleaner, just industrial size.

Where do you operate?

The machines are stationed in Abu Dhabi (ALMARKAZ) and mobilized from there. We deploy across all six GCC countries, with fast mobilization in the UAE and other GCC countries on request. Send us your site details for a mobilization estimate.

Who handles the disposal of the contaminated soil?

The suction excavator removes the polluted soil dry and discharges it into a controlled container. Disposal then follows your site's rules and the approved waste process. We focus on the safe, dry removal so the material stays contained and easy to handle.
